MUMBAI – Prices of chana were steady across key spot markets Wednesday, supported by consistent demand, traders said. Prices of tur climbed due to increased need-based buying from millers while urad rose on the back of tight supplies of the legume, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, remained steady at INR 6,250-INR 6,300 per 100 kilogram, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices are steady amid regular demand for the legume, he said. Festival demand for chana has thinned out, as millers have enough stocks to fulfil the requirement for chana dal or processed dal and besan or gram flour for festivals during August, he said.

Prices are likely to rise in September when demand for upcoming festivals such as Navratri, Dusshera, and Diwali picks up, Mehta said. However, a steep rise in prices is unlikely due to the availability of cheaper yellow peas, he said. The market expects imports of yellow peas from Canada and Russia to rise in the coming months. Yellow pea is used as a cheaper alternative to chana.

Prices of chana in Delhi held steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,225 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,650-INR 6,800 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 8–10 trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices have risen due to higher need-based demand from millers, he said.

Prices are also supported by a decline in arrivals of the legume in Maharashtra and Karnataka, traders said. The two top tur-producing states in the country have witnessed incessant rains since Monday which has hampered transportation in key spot markets, they said. In the past 24 hours, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been recorded over parts of both states, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,900-INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 7,350-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, also rose by INR 50 to INR 7,450 per 100 kg, they said.

Urad prices have risen due to a fall in supply, traders said. Shipments of urad from Brazil have been delayed while two direct vessels from Myanmar will only arrive at the end of August, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Meanwhile, domestic arrivals of the legume are down, and fresh arrivals of the new kharif crop are expected to be hit due to crop loss in top urad-producing regions amid heavy rainfall, it said.  End
