Maharashtra kharif area down 1% on yr at 14.35 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Maharashtra was 14.35 million hectares as of Monday, down 1% from 14.49 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state rose 30% on year to 1.44 million hectares, the report showed.
The area under paddy was up at 1.43 million hectares from 1.41 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of bajra fell to 323,654 hectares from 398,824 hectares.
Tur acreage in the state was slightly down at 1.207 million hectares from 1.210 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under moong fell to 208,780 hectares from 232,442 hectares. The acreage of urad so far was 373,756 hectares, against 374,903 hectares covered a year ago. The total area under all pulses was 1.86 million hectares, down from 1.89 million hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds was 5.09 million hectares, down from 5.22 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean fell to 4.94 million hectares from 5.05 million hectares, and that of groundnut fell to 134,081 hectares from 147,073 hectares.
Cotton acreage in the state was down at 3.83 million hectares from 4.08 million hectares a year ago, while the area under sugarcane rose to 213,571 hectares from 177,064 hectares.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Aug. 19, Maharashtra received 743 millimetres of rainfall, 4% above the normal of 716 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 80.6% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 68.9% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
