Gujarat kharif acreage down 1% on year at 7.81 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have sown kharif crops across 7.81 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 1% on year from 7.92 million hectares in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, more than 91% has been covered so far. 

 

The area sown under maize was down at 274,466 hectares from 284,857 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. Paddy acreage fell to 869,565 hectares from 873,391 hectares last year, and that of bajra was 162,438 hectares, down from 163,838 hectares.

 

Tur acreage was 258,063 hectares, up from 220,527 hectares last year. The acreage under moong fell to 47,395 hectares from 53,920 hectares. Similarly, urad sowing was down at 75,712 hectares from 81,979 hectares. The total area sown under all pulses was 397,496 hectares, up from 372,348 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under oilseeds so far was 2.84 million hectares, up from 2.59 million hectares the previous year. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean slipped to 274,730 hectares from 298,801 hectares a year ago while that of groundnut was up at 2.08 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage was down at 2.07 million hectares from 2.36 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables fell to 238,788 hectares from 240,491 hectares last year.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Aug. 18, Gujarat recorded 518.0 millimetres of rainfall, which is normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
