Rajasthan kharif acreage up 1% on yr at 15.56 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Rajasthan reached 15.56 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 1% on year from 15.48 million hectares in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 16.45 million hectares, which is the average of the past five years, nearly 95% has been covered so far. 

 

The area sown under bajra was up at 4.26 million hectares from 4.25 million hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under maize also rose to 984,133 hectares from 962,400 hectares last year. The acreage under paddy was 344,249 hectares, up from 290,280 hectares a year ago.

 

Moong acreage in the state rose to 2.35 million hectares from 2.25 million hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad was up at 313,497 hectares from 297,410 hectares a year ago, and that of tur surged to 14,903 hectares from 3,000 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses was 3.64 million hectares, up from nearly 3.50 million hectares covered a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 2.28 million hectares, up from 2.22 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 979,130 hectares from 1.08 million hectares last year, while that of groundnut was up at 978,301 hectares from 859,300 hectares a year ago.

 

Cotton acreage in the state rose to 628,577 hectares from 515,140 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under guar, a major crop in the state, fell to 2.39 million hectares from 2.71 million hectares a year ago, the report showed.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season, which generally starts around June, and are harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Aug. 18, the state received 444.0 millimetres of rainfall, 40% above the normal of 317.1 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
