MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, said traders. Prices were steady as demand did not pick up, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady Thursday as there was limited demand even after cutting prices by INR 10 per 100 kg the previous day, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from northern India. Prices have fallen by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg from peak levels, Gupta said.

Following the release of the sales quota for August, prices had risen nearly INR 90-INR 100 per 100 kg as the quota was deemed insufficient to meet demand ahead of the upcoming festivals during the month. However, after the initial spike in demand at the start of the month due to speculation of lower availability, demand became sluggish and prices did not sustain at higher levels, Gupta said.

Prices of the sweetener were also steady in Maharashtra as mills had already raised prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg the previous day. There was good demand before the markets remaining shut for the next three days on account of Independence Day and Janmashtami, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 4,025 per 100 kilograms in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 4,025 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,092-NR 4,182 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,920-INR 3,980 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1830 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 1.5% at 16.60 cents per pound on signs of stronger sugar production in Brazil. On Jul. 31, UNICA, a Brazilian sugar industry associate, said that Brazil's Center-South sugar output in the first half of July rose 15% on year to 3.4 million tonnes.  End
