Cotton Association retains India 2024-25 output estimate at 31.1 mln bales

MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India has maintained its estimate for the country's cotton production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) at 31.1 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg). The association said 30.2 million bales of cotton had been pressed as of Jul. 31. Cotton production in India in 2023-24 stood at 33.6 million bales.

 

The association updates its estimates almost every month, based on information from its members in 11 cotton-growing states and other trade sources. Cotton production in the north zone, comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, has been estimated at 2.95 million bales in 2024-25 and in the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, at 18.7 million bales.

 

Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, has been estimated at 8.95 million bales, according to the association. Odisha and other states are likely to account for 385,000 bales and 200,000 bales of cotton production, respectively.

 

Total supply of cotton in the 2024-25 season is estimated at 39 million bales, against 38.05 million bales in the previous season. The association has estimated imports of 3.9 million bales in 2024-25, up from 1.5 million bales in 2023-24. It has pegged exports at 1.8 million bales, against 2.8 million bales the previous year. The 2024-25 season is estimated to close with an ending stock of 5.8 million bales, against 3.9 million bales a year ago.

 

As of Jul. 31, the total supply of cotton in India was 37.4 million bales and demand was 26.2 million bales. According to the association, India exported 1.6 mln bales of cotton and imported 3.3 million bales as of Jul. 31.
