MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur fell while those of urad were steady in key spot markets across the country Wednesday, traders said. Prices of chana fell due to a slight fall in festival demand for the legume, traders said. Tur prices declined tracking a fall in the prices of imported tur, they said. Prices of urad remained steady as demand for the legume is matching its supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,300-INR 6,350 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices of chana were down due to a slight fall in demand. Millers have already stocked up on chana to fulfil demand for festivals, he said. Selling pressure from stockists also pushed prices down, as they are offloading their inventory to take advantage of the higher price range, he said.

Prices are likely to rise in the near term, as festival demand for chana dal, or processed dal, or besan is likely to renew with a string of other festivals in September and October, he said. Prices of chana in Bikaner, Rajasthan, fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 5,950 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 from Tuesday to INR 6,800-INR 6,825 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals held steady at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of domestic tur have declined tracking a fall in prices of imports from Myanmar, he said. The market is taking direction from the price movement of imported tur, he said.

As of Friday, the area sown under tur in the ongoing kharif season fell nearly 5% on year to 4.1 million hectares, data from the agriculture department showed. Many farmers across the country have shifted to crops such as maize and cotton, which offer better remuneration to farmers, Kedia said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,750-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,250-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 6,700-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, they said. Prices are steady as demand for the legume is on par with supply, traders said.

Prices of urad are likely to rise in the short term due to supply concerns in key urad-growing regions such as Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Torrential rainfall in these states has disrupted sowing and damaged already-sown crops, which is likely to lower the yield and output of the legume, market participants said.  End
