Maharashtra kharif acreage dn 1% YoY at 14.21 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have sown kharif crops across 14.21 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 1% on year from 14.36 million sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state rose more than 29% on year to 1.43 million hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy was 1.36 million hectares against 1.33 million hectares sown a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under bajra fell to 320,676 hectares from 399,093 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage in the state was down at 1.20 million hectares from 1.21 million hectares covered last year, the report showed. The acreage under moong also fell to 207,664 hectares from 230,447 hectares a year ago, while that of urad rose slightly to 372,509 hectares from 371,519 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses so far was 1.84 million hectares, down from 1.88 million hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 5.07 million hectares, down from 5.19 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 4.93 million hectares from 5.03 million hectares covered a year ago.
Cotton acreage in the state was down at 3.84 million hectares from 4.08 million hectares a year ago, while that of sugarcane was up at 181,348 hectares from 169,572 hectares last year, the report showed.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 74% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 65.1% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
