MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has lowered its global oilseed production estimate in 2025-26 (May-Apr) to 690.11 million tonnes from 693.45 million tonnes projected in July, it said in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for August. Production is seen declining by 3.34 million tonnes, mainly due to lower output of soybean, sunflower seed, and cottonseed, the department said in the report.

The global production of sunflower seed has been lowered by 1.20 million tonnes from last month to 55.10 million tonnes due to hot and dry weather conditions, leading to lower yields in the European Union, Ukraine, Turkey, and Serbia, according to the report.

The production of oilseeds in countries, excluding the US, is estimated at 563.64 million tonnes, down from 565.17 million tonnes seen in July. The output of oilseeds in the US in 2025-26 is projected to fall to 126.47 million tonnes from 128.28 million seen last month.

Global ending stocks of oilseeds in 2025-26 are pegged at 144.37 million tonnes, down from 145.18 million tonnes projected last month, according to the report.

The USDA has cut the global soybean production forecast to 426.39 million tonnes from 427.68 million tonnes estimated in July, mainly due to lower output in the US and Serbia. Estimates of soybean production in the US have been lowered to 116.82 million tonnes from 117.98 million tonnes last month.

The USDA has pegged global soybean exports for 2025-26 at 187.44 million tonnes, down slightly from 187.63 million tonnes forecast in July. Exports estimates from the US have been reduced from the previous month while they have been raised for Argentina and Uruguay, as per the report. Global soybean imports for 2025-26 are projected at 185.86 million tonnes, down from the 186.06 million tonnes seen last month. Estimates for exports from the EU, Iran, and Vietnam have been reduced from last month, the report said.

Global ending stocks of soybean are pegged at 124.90 million tonnes, down from 126.07 million tonnes forecast in July. The estimate has been lowered by 1.17 million tonnes primarily due to lower stocks in Argentina, the EU, Iran, Vietnam, and the US, according to the report. Global beginning stocks for 2025-26 are estimated at 125.19 million tonnes, marginally up from 125.12 million tonnes seen in July, the report said.

The USDA sees global soybean meal output in 2025-26 at 288.58 million tonnes, unchanged from last month. Soybean meal is a derivative of soybean, manufactured by crushing oilseeds, and is mainly used in producing poultry feed. Production of soybean meal in India in 2025-26 has been projected at 8.92 million tonnes, unchanged from the estimates in July. India is one of the largest importers of soy oil and an exporter of soybean meal.

The projection for global vegetable oil production has been lowered to 234.64 million tonnes from 235.07 million tonnes estimated in July.  End
