Gujarat kharif acreage down 3% on year at 7.49 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Kharif crops in Gujarat have been sown across 7.49 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 3% from 7.71 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, more than 87% has been covered so far.
The area sown under paddy was up at 843,554 hectares from 842,255 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage slipped to 272,411 hectares from 284,771 hectares last year, and that of bajra also fell to 157,355 hectares from 162,728 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage in the state rose to 218,717 hectares from 213,357 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under moong was down at 46,121 hectares from 51,344 hectares a year ago. The area sown under urad was 70,272 hectares, down from 81,072 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses fell to 348,162 hectares from 360,666 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 2.69 million hectares, up from 2.50 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut was up at 2.05 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares covered a year ago. The acreage under soybean also fell to 273,192 hectares from 298,373 hectares last year.
Cotton acreage in the state was down at 2.06 million hectares from 2.35 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables fell to 226,945 hectares from 230,511 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Aug. 11, Gujarat recorded 481.2 millimetres of rainfall, 2% above the normal of 471.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
