Rajasthan kharif acreage up 2% on yr at 15.42 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Rajasthan stood at 15.42 million hectares as of Friday, up more than 2% from 15.07 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 16.45 million hectares, which is the average of the past five years, nearly 94% has been covered so far. 

 

The area under bajra so far was 4.23 million hectares, up from nearly 4.20 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage was up at 977,662 hectares from 962,360 hectares. The area under paddy rose to 341,308 hectares from 280,960 hectares a year ago.

 

Moong acreage in the state was 2.33 million hectares, up from nearly 2.20 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of urad rose to 312,786 hectares from 297,370 hectares, while that of tur was up at 14,656 hectares from 3,000 hectares. The total area sown under all pulses was 3.62 million hectares, up from 3.40 million hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under oilseeds was 2.22 million hectares, up from nearly 2.20 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean fell to 977,826 hectares from 1.08 million hectares. The acreage of groundnut rose to 978,228 hectares from 859,220 hectares.

 

Cotton acreage in the state rose to 628,512 hectares from 511,840 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under guar, a major crop in the state, fell to 2.39 million hectares from 2.49 million hectares a year ago, the report showed.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Aug. 11, the state received 431.0 millimetres of rainfall, 55% above the normal of 278.2 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
