Tea Board says exports up over 6% on year at INR 10.23 bln in Apr-May

MUMBAI – India exported tea worth INR 10.23 billion in Apr-May, over 6% higher than INR 9.63 billion a year ago, according to provisional data released by Tea Board India. In volume terms, however, exports fell nearly 9% on year to 34.50 million kilograms during the period. During Jan-May, India exported tea worth INR 30.20 billion, up over 15% from a year ago, according to the data.
Exports from northern India rose 10% on year to INR 6.63 billion in Apr-May, the data showed. Exports from southern India fell slightly by 0.1% to INR 3.59 billion. In terms of volume, exports from northern India rose nearly 2% on year to 20.59 million kg, but those from southern India declined over 17% on year to 13.91 million kg.
In Jan-May, exports from north India in value terms rose over 22% to INR 20.32 billion and up nearly 9% on year to 65.95 million kg. During the same period, from south India, net tea exports were 2.6% higher at INR 9.87 billion, while in volume terms exports from the region declined over 15% to 37.79 million kg. The all India average price of tea during Jan-May was INR 291.16 per kg, up from INR 249.17 per kg a year ago.
In Apr-May, the average price of tea exported from north India was INR 322.28 per kg, up from INR 287.28 per kg a year ago. The average price of tea exported from southern India rose to INR 258.67 per kg from INR 214.44 per kg a year ago, the data showed. The average unit price of tea exported from the country rose to INR 296.63 per kg in Apr-May from INR 254.91 per kg a year ago, according to the data. End
