MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice were steady, while those of maize rose in key spot markets across the country Friday, traders said. Prices of wheat were flat amid low market activity in some markets ahead of Raksha Bandhan and steady demand for the grain in others, traders said. Prices of rice were unchanged due to regular demand, while maize rose on a slight rise in demand, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,635 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices are unchanged from the previous day due to low market activity, he said. With Raksha Bandhan on Saturday, many market participants have shut shop early, leading to muted activity, he said.

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,880 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of the staple grain in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were also stable at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer. In Delhi too, wheat prices were steady at INR 2,850 per 100 kg, traders said. Demand for the grain was largely steady, Kochar said.

Wheat prices are unlikely to see a significant fluctuation in the short term as market participants await the government's announcement of open-market sales of the food grain, Kochar said. He expects open-market sales to begin before Diwali, which is in the second half of October.

The government usually starts open market wheat sales in July or August. For the 2025–26 rabi marketing year, the government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for these sales.

Prices of 1401 basmati RICE in Vashi remained steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also stable at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. According to Vora, with demand expected to be steady for a while, prices too are likely to remain stable in the short term.

MAIZE prices in Indore rose by INR 20 from Thursday to INR 2,320 per 100 kg due to a slight rise in demand, Kochar said. Prices are likely to fluctuate in the range of INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg till arrivals of the new kharif crop begin in October, he said.   End
