Wheat steady in most mkts, traders await govt's open mkt sales

MUMBAI – Prices of wheat were steady in most markets across the country Thursday, traders said. Wheat prices held steady as participants awaited the government's announcement on open-market grain sales, they said. Prices of rice and maize also remained flat, they added.
WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,880 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of the staple grain in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were also stable at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, held steady at INR 2,635 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. In Delhi, wheat prices were up slightly by INR 5 from the previous day to INR 2,865 per 100 kg, traders said.
Demand for the grain remained steady, Kochar said. Wheat prices are unlikely to see significant fluctuation in the short term as market participants are awaiting the government's announcement of open-market sales of the food grain, he said. Kochar expects open-market sales to begin before Diwali, which is in the second half of October.
The government usually starts open market wheat sales in July or August. For the 2025–26 rabi marketing year, the government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for these sales.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE in Vashi remained steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also stable at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. According to Vora, with demand expected to be steady for a while, prices too are likely to remain stable in the short term.
As of Friday, the area under paddy in the ongoing kharif season was up 16.7% on year at 31.95 million hectares, data from the agriculture ministry showed. In Telangana, the second-largest rice-producing state in the country, paddy acreage rose 35% on year to 3.02 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, according to the state agriculture department.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,300 per 100 kg amid stable demand, Kochar said. Prices are likely to remain rangebound till arrivals of the new kharif crop begin in October, he said. As of Friday, acreage under maize across the country rose to 9.16 million hectares from 8.20 million hectares a year ago, according to the agriculture ministry. End
