Telangana kharif acreage up 13% YoY at 9.15 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Telangana reached 9.15 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up more than 13% on year from 8.07 million acres sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Paddy acreage in the state rose by nearly 35% on year to 3.02 million acres, the report showed.
Maize acreage so far was up at 552,551 acres from 397,886 acres sown a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under jowar rose to 32,107 acres from 31,792 acres.
The area sown under tur covered 443,335 acres, up from 412,743 acres sown last year, the report showed. The acreage under moong fell to 52,031 acres from 61,507 acres a year ago, and that of urad was down at 17,074 acres from 19,092 acres last year. The total area sown under all pulses was 512,929 acres, up from 494,583 acres a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was down at 358,988 acres from 379,806 acres sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 355,857 acres from 367,996 acres last year. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.
Cotton acreage in the state was up at 4.37 million acres from 4.14 million acres sown a year ago, the report showed.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 724.41 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 656.40 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1-Aug. 6, the state has received 344.2 millimetres of rainfall, 13% below the normal of 397.6 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.
In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 19.5 millimetres, ranging from 2.4 millimetres in the Karimnagar district to 60.5 millimetres in the Yadadri Bhongiri district, the report said. The timely rains have been crucial in alleviating moisture stress in rain-fed crops. "Currently, the crops sown are at the seedling vegetative growth stage, and overall crop condition is reported to be healthy... Paddy nursery sowings and transplanting operations are in progress across the state," the report said. End
