Maharashtra kharif area dn 1.3% on yr at 13.76 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI - Farmers in Maharashtra have sown kharif crops across 13.76 million hectares as of Monday, down 1.3% on year from 13.95 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state rose by nearly 29% on year to 1.41 million hectares, the report showed.

 

The area sown under paddy was up at 1.21 million hectares from 1.16 million hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under bajra fell to 316,483 hectares from 394,368 hectares a year ago, and that of jowar fell to 84,829 hectares from 105,088 hectares last year.

 

Tur acreage has so far reached 1.19 million hectares, down from 1.20 million hectares sown last year, the report showed. The area under moong fell to 207,696 hectares from 229,113 hectares a year ago. Urad acreage also fell to 367,496 hectares from 393,724 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses was down at 1.83 million hectares from 1.89 million hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 5.02 million hectares, down from 5.14 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean was down at 4.88 million hectares from 4.97 million hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage also fell to 128,082 hectares from 140,921 hectares last year. Cotton acreage in the state so far was down at 3.82 million hectares from 4.07 million hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. 

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 72.7% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 65.1% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
