Wheat up in Delhi on firm festival demand; rice, maize flat

MUMBAI – Prices of rice and maize were steady while those of wheat were mixed at key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices were steady in most markets but rose in Delhi owing to firm festival demand, they said. Prices of rice are likely to remain flat in the short term amid steady demand for the grain, they added. Prices of maize are expected to fall in the medium term once arrivals of the new kharif crop begin.
WHEAT prices in Delhi rose INR 10 from the previous day to INR 2,860 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of the grain are up slightly owing to festival demand, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. "Demand for commodities such as chana and wheat is explosive due to the festival season," he said. The season starts with Raksha Bandhan Saturday and continues till Diwali in October.
Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,880 per 100 kg amid regular demand for the grain, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of the staple grain in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were also steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE in Vashi were steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. With demand expected to be steady for a while, prices are likely to remain stable in the short term, Vora said. As of Friday, the area under paddy in the ongoing kharif season was up 16.7% on year at 31.95 million hectares, data from the agriculture ministry showed.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are likely to remain steady till arrivals of the new kharif crop begin in October, he said. Prices could touch the INR 2,000 per 100 kg mark by then, he said. As of Friday, acreage under maize across the country rose to 9.16 million hectares from 8.20 million hectares a year ago, according to the agriculture ministry. End
