MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices rose on strong festive demand while tur declined on weaker buying interest. Urad remained steady as demand for the legume matched supply, they added.
CHANA prices in Delhi rose INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,375-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, also known as gram flour, is strong because of upcoming festivals, he said. Prices are likely to rise further by INR 200-INR 300 per 100 kg in the short term because of the string of festivals such as Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, and Dussehra in the next few months, he said.
Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,425-INR 6,450 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,775-INR 6,800 per 100 kg, Ankit Kedia, a local trader, said. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices have fallen due to subdued demand for the legume, he said. Prices are unlikely to fall further as they have already reached the lowest possible level for the season, he said.
Though prices of tur are below the government's minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg for the kharif marketing year ending September, tur acreage in Maharashtra is likely to remain similar to last year, Kedia said. "Even if farmers shift to cotton for better remuneration, they have to plant tur along with it any way for its nitrogen-fixing abilities in the soil, which is needed to support cotton growth," he said.
As of Monday, the area under tur in Maharashtra was down at 1.19 million hectares from 1.20 million hectares a year ago, data from the state agriculture department showed. Maharashtra is the top tur-producing state in the country.
Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, fell INR 86 from the previous day to INR 6,250-INR 6,639 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, held steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 6,700-INR 7,500 per 100 kg. Prices are steady as demand for the legume is on a par with supply, traders said.
The area sown with urad or black gram in the current kharif season has fallen due to heavy rainfall and farmers opting for alternative crops such as maize, analysts and traders said. Urad acreage is likely to remain down for the rest of the season as the sowing window has almost come to a close, they said. As of Friday, the acreage under urad across the country was down 3% at 1.86 million hectares, according to data from the agriculture ministry. End
