Rajasthan kharif acreage up 4% on yr at 15.31 mln has as of Mon

MUMBAI – Sowing of kharif crops in Rajasthan reached 15.31 million hectares as of Monday, up more than 4% on year from 14.71 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 16.5 million hectares, which is the average of the past five years, over 92% has been covered so far. 

 

The area sown under bajra in the state was up at 4.21 million hectares from 4.14 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under maize rose to 977,532 hectares from 954,510 hectares last year and that of paddy also rose to 340,978 hectares from 272,750 hectares a year ago. 

 

Moong acreage so far covered 2.32 million hectares, up from 2.17 million hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad was up at 312,033 hectares from 296,950 hectares a year ago. Tur acreage rose to 14,409 hectares from 3,000 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses was 3.61 million hectares, up from 3.31 million hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds was 2.19 million hectares, up from 2.16 million hectares sown in the previous year. Among oilseeds, the acreage under soybean was down at 977,255 hectares from 1.08 million hectares last year while that of groundnut rose to 967,485 hectares from 846,640 hectares a year ago.

 

The area under guar, a major crop in the state, rose to 2.344 million hectares from 2.339 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Cotton acreage rose to 628,498 hectares from 511,790 hectares.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Aug. 5, the state received 428.8 millimetres of rainfall, 77% above the normal of 242.9 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
