Gujarat kharif acreage down 4% on year at 7.05 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The acreage under kharif crops in Gujarat reached 7.05 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 4% on year from 7.37 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, more than 82% has been covered so far.
Maize acreage so far is down at 264,982 hectares from 284,625 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under paddy fell to 717,329 hectares from 764,463 hectares last year. The acreage under bajra rose to 153,639 hectares from 149,300 hectares a year ago.
The area sown under tur was 183,910 hectares, down from 205,202 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under urad also fell to 58,931 hectares from 76,904 hectares last year while that of moong was up at 44,190 hectares from 43,921 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses so far fell to 296,970 hectares from 339,313 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds rose to 2.58 million hectares from 2.39 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 2.04 million hectares from nearly 1.90 million hectares last year. Soybean acreage was down at 265,632 hectares from 296,580 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage was down at 2.04 million hectares from 2.34 million hectares sown in the previous year. The area sown under vegetables fell to 203,188 hectares from 214,012 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Aug. 4, Gujarat recorded 475.7 millimetres of rainfall, 17% above the normal of 406.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
