MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice remained flat in key spot markets across the country on Monday due to steady demand and a lack of cues, traders said. Prices of maize fell due to muted demand, they said.
WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,880 per 100 kilogram, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of the staple grain in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were also steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer. Similarly, prices of the grain in Delhi were flat at INR 2,850 per 100 kg, traders said.
Market participants are awaiting the government's announcement of open-market sales of wheat, Vora said.
The government sees no immediate need to start open-market sales of wheat in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) as prices are largely stable and there is adequate supply of the food grain in the market, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said on Jul. 24.
With sufficient wheat stocks available in the domestic market, market participants agreed with the statement. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open-market sales of wheat in 2025-26.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE in Vashi were steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. With steady demand expected for a while, prices are likely to remain stable in the short term, Vora said.
MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 50 from the previous week to INR 2,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are expected to fall further in the medium term once arrivals of the new kharif maize crop begin, he said. Prices could touch the INR 2,000-per-100 kg mark by then, he said. End
