NEW DELHI – Farmers across the country have planted soybean over 11.97 million hectares as of Thursday, mostly in Madhya Pradesh, the Soybean Processors Association of India said. According to the government's latest available estimate, the oilseed has been planted over 11.77 million hectares, SOPA said. Last year, soybean was sown across under 12.96 mlllion hectares, as per government data.
SOPA said the overall soybean crop condition is "normal" across the major soybean-growing states. "In Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, the crop health is reported to be good, with healthy plant growth observed," SOPA said in a release Friday. Soybean is the most produced oilseed in India.
Though some farmers in Madhya Pradesh's Ashoknagar, Guna, Shivpuri, Betul, Harda, Khandwa, and Khargone districts have converted a portion of soybean area to maize cultivation, the state remains the top grower with 5.19 million hectares, marginally down from 5.20 million hectares last year. In Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh, Bhopal, Raisen, and Burhanpur, soybean acreage has increased compared to last year.
Soybean acreage in Maharashtra has risen to 4.82 million hectares, up from 4.50 million hectares. This is despite some farmers in Nashik and Satara districts of the state shifting from soybean to maize, red gram, and cotton cultivation. In Maharashtra's Hingoli, Nanded, and Jalgaon, soybean acreage has increased from last year. In Karnataka, soybean acreage has increased 13% on year to 422,000 hectares.
