MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, maize, and rice remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country on Friday amid steady demand, traders said. Prices of maize and rice are likely to remain stable in the near term while those of wheat could rise, market participants said.
WHEAT prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,870 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of the staple grain at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were also steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said wholesale dealer Devendra Vora. In Delhi, wheat prices fell slightly by INR 5 from the previous day to INR 2,560 per 100 kg, traders said.
Prices of wheat are likely to rise by INR 100 per 100 kg in the near term on firm demand ahead of the festival season, Kochar said. The festival season starts with Raksha Bandhan on Aug. 9 and continues till Diwali in late October.
With sufficient wheat stocks available in the domestic market, market participants agreed with the government statement that there was no immediate need for open-market sales of wheat. Last week, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said the government sees no immediate need to start open-market sales of wheat in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) as prices are largely stable and there is adequate supply of the food grain in the market. The government typically begins wheat sales in the open market in July or August. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open-market sales of wheat in 2025-26.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE in Vashi were steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. With steady demand expected for a while, prices are likely to remain stable in the short term, Vora said.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,350 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Kochar expects prices to fall once the new kharif maize crop starts arriving in October. End
