Andhra Pradesh kharif area up 4% on yr at 1.35 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh as of Wednesday reached 1.35 million hectares, up more than 4% on year from 1.29 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's target area for the ongoing kharif season is 3.45 million hectares, of which 39% has been covered so far.

 

The area sown under paddy was up at 652,000 hectares from 593,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage also rose to 100,000 hectares in the state from 77,000 hectares last year.

 

Tur acreage in the state was at 108,000 hectares, up from 97,000 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad was up at 12,000 hectares from 11,000 hectares a year ago, while that of moong was the same as last year at 4,000 hectares. The total area sown under all pulses was 124,000 hectares, up from 112,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 139,000 hectares, down from 225,000 hectares sown last year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut fell to 109,000 hectares from 195,000 hectares.

 

Cotton acreage in the state was up at 294,000 hectares from 236,000 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Jul. 31, Andhra Pradesh recorded 183.8 millimetres of rainfall, 18% below the normal of 225.2 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
