MUMBAI – The government has raised the sugar sales quota for August for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, according to a notification by the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The all-India sales quota for July has been set at 2.25 million tonnes, up over 2% from 2.20 million tonnes in July and also up over 2% from 2.2 million tonnes a year ago.
Maharashtra's sales quota has been raised by 0.4% on month to 664,419 tonnes in August, while the quota for Uttar Pradesh has been increased by 0.5% to 912,525 tonnes.
The sales quota for Karnataka has been increased by 9% to 264,089 tonnes. In the ongoing sugar season so far, mills in Karnataka have produced 4.06 million tonnes of sugar, down 21.3% from 5.16 million tonnes a year ago, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. Seven mills are running in the state as of Wednesday, compared to just one mill last year. For the entire sugar year, the federation estimates sugar output in Karnataka to be 4.2 million tonnes, lower than 5.3 million tonnes produced last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state is seen at 8.05%, down from 9.30% last season.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
The excess quantity of sugar sold during May 2025, is deducted from the release quota of August 2025. Due to the current domestic demand scenario, the violation in terms of less utilisation of quota during May has been exempted, according to the release.
