MUMBAI – Prices of mustard fell in key markets across the country Thursday while those of soybean and groundnut were mixed, traders said. Although oilseed prices are expected to rise during the festival season, gains in soybean and groundnut could be limited due to the availability of cheaper palm oil, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan fell by INR 25 to INR 7,575-INR 7,600 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodity trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were steady at 300,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.

Prices of the oilseed at Kota in Rajasthan fell by INR 151 to INR 7,100 per 100 kg. The arrivals were steady at 3,000 bags, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. "Arrivals are low as farmers were unable to reach mandis with the crops due to heavy rainfall in several parts of Rajasthan," Sameriya said.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Rajasthan on Thursday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall is between 115.6 millimetres and 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours. However, the weather bureau expects rainfall intensity over eastern Rajasthan to decrease from Friday.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh rose by INR 200 from the previous day to INR 4,100-INR 4,850 per 100 kg. Arrivals were down by 500 bags to 2,800 bags, said local trader Narendra Porwal. Argentina has increased export duties, making imports costlier, which in turn has led to a surge in demand for domestic production, pushing up prices, said Porwal.

However, prices of soybean at Gondal in Gujarat fell by INR 200 to INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 7,900 bags, down from 10,100 bags the previous day, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam rose INR 100 from the previous day to INR 4,800-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, and arrivals were down by 200 bags to 1,300 bags, said Porwal. Prices of groundnut in Gondal fell INR 200-INR 300 to INR 4,200-INR 5,200 per 100 kg while arrivals rose to 2,370 bags from 390 bags the previous day, Virvani said. Arrivals are going to fall from here on as there is less crop available, he added.
