Telangana kharif area up 20% on yr at 8.69 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Kharif crops in Telangana have been sown across 8.69 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up 20% on year from 7.24 million acres sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Paddy acreage in the state rose over 72% on year to 2.61 million acres, the report showed.
The area sown under maize was up at 546,884 acres from 380,451 acres a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under jowar also rose to 31,851 acres from 30,176 acres last year.
Tur acreage in the state so far was 440,355 acres, up from 395,620 acres sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under moong was down at 51,166 acres from 60,976 acres last year, and that of urad also fell to 16,621 acres from 18,572 acres a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was up at 508,631 acres from 476,331 acres last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was 358,505 acres, down from 377,022 acres sown last year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 355,507 acres from 366,430 acres a year ago. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.
Cotton acreage in the state so far rose to 4.33 million acres from 4.07 million acres sown a year ago, according to the report.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 719.85 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 455.15 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 30, the state has received 326.9 millimetres of rainfall, 5% below the normal of 343.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.
In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 72.3 millimetres, ranging from 10.5 millimetres in the Jogulamba Gadwal district to 155.1 millimetres in the Mulugu district, the report said. The timely rains have been crucial in alleviating moisture stress in rain-fed crops. "Currently, the crops sown are at the seedling vegetative growth stage, and overall crop condition is reported to be healthy... Paddy nursery sowings and transplanting operations are in progress across the state," the report said. End
