Maharashtra kharif acreage dn 2% YoY at 13.28 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have sown kharif crops across 13.28 million hectares as of Monday, down 2% from 13.54 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture ministry. Maize acreage in the state rose nearly 32% on year to 1.38 million hectares, the report showed.

 

The area under paddy was down at 893,812 hectares from 910,843 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of bajra fell to 313,142 hectares from 391,179 hectares and that of jowar fell to 82,157 hectares from 101,026 hectares a year ago.

 

Tur acreage so far stood at 1.18 million hectares, down from nearly 1.20 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage of moong fell to 207,095 hectares from 226,095 hectares. Urad acreage was down at 353,207 hectares compared to 392,049 hectares a year ago. The total area under all pulses fell to 1.79 million hectares from 1.88 million hectares.

 

The total area under all oilseeds in the state was down at 4.95 million hectares from 5.10 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean fell to 4.82 million hectares from 4.94 hectares, and that of groundnut stood at 118,830 hectares, against 140,056 hectares a year ago.

 

Cotton acreage in the state so far was 3.80 million hectares, down from 4.05 million hectares a year ago, the report showed.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 71.1% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 57.3% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
