MUMBAI – Prices of all pulses were steady in key spot markets across the country on Wednesday, traders said. Prices of chana and masur are likely to rise in the near term on strong festival demand, they said. Prices of tur are also likely to rise due to steady demand and a delay in shipments of African-origin tur, traders added.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,500-INR 6,550 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have temporarily stabilised due to subdued market activity in the region owing to heavy rainfall, he said. However, prices are likely to rise again due to firm demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan during the upcoming festivals, he said.

"These three-four months (Aug-Nov) will see good demand (for chana) due to Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Shradh, Dussehra, Navratri, and Diwali," Kochar said. A further rise in chana prices is imminent, and only government intervention could cool this rally in the coming months, he said. The government could offload its chana stocks in the medium term to cool off prices, and stockists could also start selling their stocks to take advantage of higher rates, but it is unlikely to bring prices down sharply, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 6,375-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,925-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices are steady due to a lack of cues in the market, he said.

Prices of tur are likely to rise in the near term as demand is expected to pick up from this week, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. Steady demand from millers amid low arrivals of the domestic crop and a delay in shipments of African tur till September could support prices, it said. However, a steep rise in prices is unlikely due to the availability of Myanmar tur stocks.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,900-INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,600-INR 6,650 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are steady as demand for the legume is on par with its supply, he said. Prices are likely to rise in the short term due to a drop in arrivals and strong festival demand. Currently, stockists do not have enough stocks of the legume to fulfil festival demand, which is also likely to support prices, he said.

Prices of the choti variety of masur at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,800 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur rose by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 8,500-INR 8,800 per 100 kg.  End
