MUMBAI – Prices of soybean and groundnut rose in key markets on Tuesday while prices of mustard were steady, said traders. Prices of all oilseeds, which have been declining for the past couple of months due to weak demand, are expected to increase in the coming months as demand improves ahead of the festival season, traders said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,575-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were unchanged at 400,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.
In Kota, Rajasthan, prices of the oilseed were steady at INR 7,100 per 100 kg. The arrivals were at 4,000 bags, down 1,000 bags from the previous day, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. "Arrivals are lower as farmers were unable to reach mandis with the crops due to heavy rainfall in several parts of Rajasthan," Sameriya said. The trader also said that as the government releases stock of mustard, prices might not increase as much, even if demand is high during the festival season.
SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh rose INR 50 to INR 3,900-INR 4,350 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 3,800 bags, up 100 bags from the previous day, said local trader Narendra Porwal. Prices of soybean, which had been declining so far, rose slightly Tuesday due to higher demand for all oilseeds ahead of the festivals season, Porwal said. However, lower export demand of inferior quality soybeans could limit gains, traders said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam rose INR 50 to INR 4,700-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, and arrivals were steady at 1,700 bags, said Porwal. Although groundnut prices rose due to overall higher edible oil prices, increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil is likely to cap gains in the medium term. Palm oil is used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
