MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur rose Tuesday, while those of urad were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose due to a rise in festival demand for the legume, they said. Prices of tur rose tracking a rise in prices of imports, they said. Prices of urad were steady in some markets and rose in others due to strong festival demand and a drop in imports, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 75 from Monday to INR 6,500-INR 6,525 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals dropped by 300 bags to 700 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Firm demand for chana dal, or processed dal, and besan for the upcoming festivals is supporting prices, he said. Prices also rose due to a drop in arrivals, as sellers kept away from markets on the occasion of Nag Panchami on Tuesday, he said.

Prices are likely to reach the INR 7,000-per-100 kg mark in the short term, Kedia said. However, prices could come under selling pressure after reaching that level, he said. "Stockists are waiting for prices to reach higher levels so that they can begin offloading their stocks to take advantage of the higher price levels," he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 6,400 per 100 kg on Tuesday, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola rose by INR 25 from Monday to INR 6,950-INR 6,975 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals fell by 500 bags to 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Similar to chana, arrivals have dropped owing to festivities in the region, supporting prices. However, the drop in arrivals is temporary as these are otherwise steady, he said. Farmers will continue to hold on to ample stocks of the crop from the high production last season, Kedia said.

The demand for domestic tur is too low to give the market any direction, Kedia said. As such, domestic tur prices are taking cues from the price movement in imports, he said. Prices of tur are likely to fluctuate in the INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg range, moving in accordance with the trend in prices of imports from African countries and Myanmar, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,900-INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from Monday to INR 6,500-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,700-INR 7,500 per 100 kg.

Urad prices are expected to rise further in the near term due to a rise in demand for festivals, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Imports from Myanmar are also likely to fall further in August, which is likely to support prices. The market is keeping an eye on the sowing progress of the kharif urad crop. As of Friday, urad acreage across the country fell 7% on year to 1.66 million hectares, data from the agriculture ministry showed.  End
