Karnataka kharif area up 0.4% on year at 6.32 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – Kharif sowing in Karnataka was marginally higher at 6.32 million hectares as of Friday, compared with nearly 6.30 million hectares a year ago, a report released by the state agriculture department showed. Maize acreage in the state rose nearly 12% on year to 1.63 million hectares, the report showed.
The area under paddy was up at 434,000 hectares, againstg 270,500 hectares sown a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of bajra fell to 98,700 hectares from 132,200 hectares.
Tur acreage stood at 1.30 million hectares, down from 1.55 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage of moong fell to 413,900 hectares from 429,000 hectares, while that of urad rose to 94,800 hectares from 92,000 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds was down at 639,500 hectares compared to 734,800 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean was 422,000 hectares, against 420,400 hectares a year ago. The area under groundnut fell to 147,500 hectares from 242,400 hectares.
Sugarcane acreage in the state was up at 674,800 hectares from 603,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under cotton rose to 749,900 hectares from 640,500 hectares.
From Jun. 1 to Jul. 28, Karnataka received 14?ove-normal rainfall at 489.3 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The sowing of kharif crops in Karnataka usually begins in June and ends by September. The main kharif crops in the state are maize, tur, soybean, sugarcane, horse gram, cotton, red chillies, and turmeric. End
