Gujarat kharif acreage down 6% on year at 6.56 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Gujarat reached 6.56 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 6% on year from 6.97 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a release by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 77% has been covered so far.
Groundnut acreage was up at 2.01 million hectares from 1.88 million hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under soybean fell to 253,922 hectares from 292,724 hectares last year. The total area sown under all oilseeds stood at 2.43 million hectares, up from 2.29 million hectares a year ago.
The area sown under paddy so far fell to 576,827 hectares from 631,955 hectares last year. Maize acreage was also down at 253,575 hectares from 281,849 hectares a year ago. The acreage under bajra was 142,861 hectares against 142,320 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all pulses was 252,616 hectares, down from 308,586 hectares sown in the previous year, as per the report. Under pulses, the acreage under tur fell to 155,227 hectares from 196,715 hectares a year ago. The acreage under urad also fell to 50,491 hectares from 64,575 hectares last year while that of moong was up at 38,614 hectares from 37,430 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage was down at 2.02 million hectares from 2.32 million hectares sown in the previous year. The area sown under vegetables fell to 176,718 hectares from 197,219 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1-Jul. 28, Gujarat recorded 463.2 millimetres of rainfall, 35% above the normal of 342.8 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
