Rajasthan kharif acreage up 7% on yr at 14.93 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Rajasthan have sown kharif crops across 14.93 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 7% on year from 13.97 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 16.5 million hectares, which is the average of the past five years, nearly 91% has been covered so far. 

 

Moong acreage in the state stood at 2.26 million hectares, up from 2.11 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad rose to 311,345 hectares from 294,300 hectares, and that of tur was up at 13,665 hectares from 3,000 hectares a year ago. The total area under all pulses rose to 3.53 million hectares from 3.17 million hectares a year ago.

 

The acreage of maize rose to 966,232 hectares from 948,670 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under paddy was up at 316,464 hectares from 253,110 hectares a year ago. Bajra acreage in the state stood at 4.17 million hectares, up from 4.0 million hectares last year.

 

The total area under all oilseeds was at 2.14 million hectares, against 2.11 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean fell to 970,297 hectares from 1.10 million hectares. The acreage of groundnut rose to 958,514 hectares from 807,370 hectares a year ago.

 

The area under guar, a major crop in the state, rose to 2.18 million hectares from 2.04 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Cotton acreage rose to 628,104 hectares from 503,000 hectares.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Jul. 28, the state received 384.7 millimetres of rainfall, 92% above the normal of 200.4 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
