MUMBAI – Prices of mustard were mixed on Monday in the key spot markets in the country, while those of soybean and groundnut were steady, traders said. Prices of all oilseeds, which have been declining for the past couple of months due to weak demand, are expected to increase in the coming months as demand improves ahead of the festivals.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan fell INR 75 to INR 7,575-INR 7,600 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were unchanged at 400,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.

However, in Rajasthan's Kota, mustard prices were steady at INR 7,100 per 100 kg. The arrivals were at 5,000 bags, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. "Arrivals are lower as farmers were unable to reach mandis with the crops due to heavy rainfall in several parts of Rajasthan," Sameriya said. The trader also said that as the government releases stock of mustard, prices might not increase as much, even if there is higher demand during the festival season.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 3,900-INR 4,300 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 3,700 bags, down 200 bags from the previous day, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Prices of soybean, which have been declining, could increase during the coming days due to upcoming festivals, traders said. Export demand is low because the quality of domestic soybeans is inferior to that from the US, they added.

The Gondal market in Gujarat was shut as the holy month of Shravan had begun, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,700-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, and arrivals were at 1,700 bags, down from 1,900 bags during the previous day, said Porwal. Groundnut prices are expected to decline in the medium term due to weak demand and the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
