MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell while prices of tur and moong were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana fell due to a correction, they said. Prices of tur fell in some markets while they were steady in others amid limited demand and the availability of imports, they said. Prices of moong were steady in some markets as millers made only need-based purchases, they added.

Prices of CHANA in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 50 from Friday to INR 6,325-INR 6,375 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices are correcting after a steep rise of INR 200-INR 300 per 100 kg in the previous week due to a rise in festival demand, Kakani said.

Prices are unlikely to fall further as demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan remains firm ahead of the festival season, Kakani said. The festival season refers to a series of Hindu festivals from August, starting with Raksha Bandhan on Aug. 9 and continuing till Diwali in late October.

Prices are likely to fluctuate at the upper level of the range as another sharp rise in prices seems unlikely, Kakani said. Though arrivals have dropped considerably, farmers and stockists have enough stock on hand, which they will keep offloading slowly to take advantage of higher prices, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell INR 25 from the previous week to INR 6,275 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,700-INR 6,800 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 18 trucks arrived in the market, carrying 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each, he said. Prices are fluctuating by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg amid limited demand and ample availability of imports, he said. Prices could rise in the short term as miller demand rises, though a steep rise is unlikely due to the steady arrivals of pigeon peas from Africa and Myanmar, he said.

Meanwhile, the progress of sowing in Maharashtra has slowed down on account of uneven distribution of rainfall over the tur-producing regions in the state, Sanklecha said. However, tur acreage in the state is likely to remain the same as last year, he added. As of Jul. 21, tur acreage in Maharashtra was down slightly at 1.14 million hectares from 1.16 million hectares the previous year, according to a report released by the state agriculture ministry. Maharashtra is the country's top tur-producing state.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 100 from the previous week to INR 6,850-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MOONG prices in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,500-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of moong in Jaipur, Rajasthan, fell INR 100 from Friday to INR 6,900-INR 7,200 per 100 kg.

Prices are steady in some markets as millers are only making need-based purchases, which are not large enough to push prices up, Sanklecha said. Prices of moong fell in some key spot markets owing to sluggish demand, he said.  End
