MUMBAI – Prices of oilseeds were mixed in key markets across the country Friday. Mustard prices rose on good demand ahead of the festival season, but groundnut prices fell and soybean prices were steady, said traders.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 75 to INR 7,650-INR 7,675 per 100 kg, according to the Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were unchanged at 400,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Prices rose on account of increase in demand ahead of the festival season, traders said.

SOYBEAN prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were steady at INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 6,700 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) against 19,200 bags the previous day, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Prices of the oilseed have been down but are likely to increase in the coming months, traders said. However, low export demand because of the poor quality of domestic soybean compared to that from America is likely to cap gains, they added.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal fell INR 400 to INR 4,500-INR 5,200 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 2,130 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down from 4,380 bags during the previous day, said Virvani. Groundnut prices fell owing to weak demand on account of the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
