MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur fell on Friday in key spot markets across the country, while those of masur remained steady, traders said. Prices of chana, which had risen sharply in the past two days following a rise in festival demand, fell due to a slight correction, they said. Rates on tur fell tracking a drop in import prices. Prices of masur stabilised temporarily in the upper range and are likely to rise further in the short term, they said.

CHANA prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh fell INR 50 to INR 6,450-INR 6,500 per 100 kilograms, Raja Jain, a local trader, said. Prices corrected slightly after rising steeply by INR 200-INR 250 in two days, he said. The fall in prices is temporary, as festival demand for the legume remains firm, he said. Jain expects prices to rise to the INR 7,000-mark in the short term.

The fall in prices was limited due to a drop in arrivals, Jain said. Arrivals of chana usually drop during this time of the year, with farmers holding onto their leftover stocks to offload later in October or November, when supplies are tight amid higher demand, he said. Arrivals have also fallen as intense rainfall in northern India has made transportation difficult, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 6,350-INR 6,375 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices at Akola in Maharashtra fell by INR 25 on Friday to INR 6,950-INR 6,975 per 100 kg, Ashok Gupta, a local trader, said. Rates on domestic tur fell, tracking a drop in import prices, he said. The demand for domestic tur is low, he said.

Apart from imported tur, domestic prices are also being influenced by the positive market sentiment due to a rise in demand for other pulses, such as chana and masur, ahead of upcoming festivals, Gupta said. Price changes in domestic tur are likely to move in a range of INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the short term, he said.

Prices of tur at Kalaburagi in Karnataka fell by INR 100 on Friday to INR 6,000-INR 6,619 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,450-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices of masur have stabilised in the upper range after rising due to festival demand, he said. Prices are likely to increase further in the near term as arrivals have dropped, he said.

Prices of the choti variety of masur at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,700 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur rose by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 7,500-INR 8,400 per 100 kg.  End
