India Apr-May spices export up 39% YoY at 400,188 tn; jeera exports down 27%

MUMBAI – India's spices exports rose 39% in Apr-May to 400,188.49 tonnes from 287,637.2 tonnes same period a year ago, Spices Board of India data shows. In terms of value, exports of spices were up 10% on year at $893.9 million.

 

India exported 45,142.95 tonnes of jeera in Apr-May, down 27% from the previous year, the data shows. Exports of fennel fell the most during the period, by 74% to 5,885.28 tonnes. Large cardamom exports in Apr-May were down 29% on year at 214.84 tonnes. Exports of other spices, which include asafoetida, cinnamon, cassia, cambodge, and saffron, fell by 31% to 10,730.94 tonnes in Apr-May, according to the data.

 

Fenugreek exports fell 29% on year to 10,041.21 tonnes and celery exports were down 28% to 841.16 tonnes, the data showed. Exports of nutmeg and mace fell 21% on year to 649.94 tonnes and exports of mint products, which include menthol, menthol crystals, and other mint oils, fell 17% on year to 3,673 tonnes, according to the data.

 

On the other hand, ginger exports rose by a whopping 441% to 37,585.24 tonnes in Apr-May, followed by chilli which jumped 135% to 185,011.04 tonnes, the spices board said. Coriander exports rose 21% on year during Apr-May to 13,857.97 tonnes and turmeric exports rose 8% to 34,162.28 tonnes, according to the data. Exports of small cardamom were 19% higher on year at 1,519.78 tonnes, and exports of pepper rose 11% to 3,661.78 tonnes, it said. Garlic exports rose 12% on year to 9,500.50 tonnes, as per the data.
