Andhra Pradesh kharif area dn 2% on yr at 1.0 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI - The area sown under kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh was down 2% on year at 1.00 million hectares as of Wednesday from 1.03 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. Paddy acreage in the state rose over 4% on year to 468,000 hectares, the report showed.

 

The area sown under maize rose to 76,000 hectares from 65,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under bajra fell to 13,000 hectares from 14,000 hectares last year.

 

Pulses acreage in the state also declined to 81,000 hectares from 95,000 hectares a year ago. Acreage of tur, the largest pulse in the state, was down at 68,000 hectares from 82,000 hectares sown last year. The acreage under moong was steady from last year at 3,000 hectares, and that of urad rose to 10,000 hectares from 9,000 hectares last year.

 

As per the report, the total area sown under oilseeds stood at 105,000 hectares, down from 191,000 hectares sown in the previous year. Among oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut fell to 81,000 hectares from 164,000 hectares last year. Soybean acreage was steady from the previous year at 3,000 hectares sown a year ago. Cotton acreage rose to 242,000 hectares from 186,000 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year. The area under sugarcane fell to 9,000 hectares from 14,000 hectares a year ago.  

 

Rainfall over Andhra Pradesh has been deficient in the monsoon season so far, it is likely to improve and be above normal in July, officials and experts said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 23, Andhra Pradesh recorded rainfall of 173.4 millimetres, over 20?low the normal of 217.5 millimetres, the report said.  End
