MUMBAI – Prices of mustard, soybean and groundnut rose in key markets across the country on Thursday due to improved demand, said traders. Demand for oilseeds is increasing on anticipation of firm demand for edible oils ahead of the festival season, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 125 to INR 7,575-INR 7,600 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were at 400,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), same as the previous day, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research. Prices rose due to anticipation of demand ahead of the festival season, traders said.

SOYBEAN prices at Gondal in Gujarat rose INR 100 to INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 19,200 bags, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. Prices of the oilseed have been at lower levels, but are likely to increase in the coming months, traders said. However low export demand because of the low quality of domestic soybean to that from America, is likely to cap the gains, they added.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal rose INR 100 to INR 4,500-INR 5,600 per 100 kg and arrivals were at 4,380 bags, said Virvani. Groundnut prices are expected to fall in the medium term due to weak demand on account of the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
