NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera and turmeric were up while those of coriander were steady on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Thursday. Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera rose on buying interest at lower prices.
At 1452 IST, the most active August contract of CORIANDER was steady at INR 7,690 per 100 kg because of limited buying support over large carry-over stocks, along with continued selling by growers, which is likely to keep market prices under pressure, said Alok Pandey, analyst at SMC Global Securities.
However, prices of the spice are seen rising in the near term as arrivals have reduced in major producing states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat because of the rains, a report by the brokerage stated. Additionally, depleting old stocks and traders' reluctance to release new stocks at current prices are likely to lend support to prices, they said.
At 1458 IST, the most active August contract of JEERA was up 0.1% at INR 19,140 per 100 kg, driven by buying interest at lower levels. However, with export demand likely to rise on supply concerns from other major producers such as Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan, prices may go up in the near term, analysts said. Jeera exports during Apr–May fell 27% on year to 42,926 tonnes, data from the commerce ministry showed.
The most active August contract of TURMERIC was up 0.5% at INR 13,250 per 100 kg due to short-covering at current prices, which are hovering at lower levels. Prices of turmeric have fallen approximately INR 1,500 per 100 kg from the prices ruling in mid-June, Pandey said. The upside is likely to be restricted by abundant availability of the commodity. "Farmers have intensified stock offloading in anticipation of higher acreage this year, adding to the downward pressure on prices," SMC Global said.
