MUMBAI – Wheat prices rose in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, due to firm demand and delayed government open market sales, traders said. Prices are likely to remain in an upward trend as the government has not yet announced the date for open market sales. Prices of maize and rice were steady from the previous day due to lack of new cues.

Prices of WHEAT in Indore were up by INR 30 from the previous day at INR 2,830 per 100 kilograms due to firm demand ahead of festivals, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Also, the government has not yet started to sell wheat in the open market, which is also driving prices up, he added.

Traders expect prices to rise by INR 50 per 100 kg in the near-term due to firm demand and no sales by the government. The government typically begins wheat sales in the open market from July or August. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for wheat open-market sales in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).

On Thursday, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said the government sees no immediate requirement to start open-market sales of wheat in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) as prices are largely stable, and the market has an adequate supply of the grain.

Wheat prices were steady at Kota in Rajasthan at INR 2,550 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. However, arrivals plunged to 4,000 bags from 14,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) the previous day due to heavy rainfall in the region, he said. Farmers usually do not bring wheat in when it rains, he added.

According to the India Meteorological Department, parts of east Rajasthan recorded heavy rainfall of 7–11 centimetres on Wednesday. The weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Rajasthan on Sunday and Monday, with heavy rainfall continuing during the week.

MAIZE prices in Indore were largely steady at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, local trader Kochar said. He said 30-40% of the maize crop in the Gwalior region has been damaged due to excess rainfall so far this southwest monsoon. "Due to excessive rainfall in the Gwalior belt, soybean and urad crops have rotted. Additionally, the crop area has reduced as waterlogging in many fields has prevented sowing," he added.

According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, maize acreage was 7.1 million hectares as of Friday, up over 15% on year. Kochar said maize output in the kharif season is likely to be at par with last year's output. However, there will be more clarity about production only after a month, he added.

Prices of sona masoori RICE were steady from the previous day at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.  End
