Telangana kharif area up 15% on yr at 7.63 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Telangana reached 7.63 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up 15% on year from 6.63 million acres sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture ministry. Paddy acreage in the state rose over 66% on year to 1.75 million acres, the report showed.

 

The area sown under maize rose to 520,527 acres from 363,646 acres a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under jowar stood at 29,608 acres against 29,256 acres last year.

 

Tur acreage in the state was up at 421,563 acres from 365,603 acres a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under moong fell to 49,815 acres from 57,853 acres last year, and that of urad was down at 14,991 acres from 17,983 acres a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses stood at 486,902 acres, up from 442,538 acres last year.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 351,380 acres, down from 370,928 acres sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 349,620 acres from 362,779 acres a year ago. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.

 

Cotton acreage in the state so far rose to 4.20 million acres from 3.98 million acres sown a year ago, according to the report.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 639.88 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 269.77 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 23, the state has received 257.8 millimetres of rainfall, 10% below the normal of 286.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.

 

In the week ended Wednesday, the state received a cumulative rainfall of 92.0 millimetres, ranging from 16.9 millimetres in the Nizamabad district to 164.7 millimetres in the Mulugu district, the report said. The timely rains have been crucial in alleviating moisture stress in rain-fed crops. "Currently, the crops sown are at the seedling vegetative growth stage, and overall crop condition is reported to be healthy. Paddy nursery sowings and transplanting operations are in progress across the state," the report said.   End
