MUMBAI – Prices of wheat rose Wednesday in Navi Mumbai's Vashi due to firm demand and low supply amid heavy rains in the city, traders said. Rice and maize prices were steady from the previous day due to lack of new cues, traders said.

WHEAT prices in Vashi were up INR 50 from the previous day at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kilogram due to low supply amid heavy rainfall and firm demand, said wholesale dealer Devendra Vora. Prices were also supported as the government has not yet started selling wheat under the open market sales scheme.

The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall over the city and its suburbs for Wednesday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

There is a possibility of prices rising by INR 50 per 100 kg in the near-term due to firm demand and no sales by the government, Vora said. The government typically begins wheat sales in the open market from Jul. 1. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for wheat open-market sales in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). Vora said the government may start selling wheat in August.

Wheat prices were steady at Kota in Rajasthan at INR 2,550 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 14,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), but were higher than 10,000 bags seen during the last week, he said.

MAIZE prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,285 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. The market expects a higher maize supply in October from the ongoing kharif crop, owing to increased acreage. According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, maize acreage was 7.1 million hectares, up over 15% on year as of Friday.

Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety remained steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Vora said rice prices are likely to remain steady in the near term.

Prices of sona masoori rice were also steady at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.  End
