MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady due to limited buying. Prices could rise ahead of the festival season, they said.
Mills across Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady again on Wednesday as there was little demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills had raised rates by INR 25-INR 30 per 100 kg on Monday on anticipation of demand increasing at the end of the month, when Kanwar Yatra is to end.
At the moment there is no demand due to the unavailability of trucks to transport stocks. As the yatra ends, there will be firm demand as the resale market would have exhausted stocks in the pipeline, Gupta said.
Sugar prices have been down due to limited demand from confectioners, he said. Demand from ice cream and soft drink manufacturers has also declined due to lower temperatures.
Sweetener prices were also steady in key markets of Maharashtra on Wednesday, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices will increase once demand picks up ahead of festivals, Kuvadia said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,980-NR 4,062 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,840-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1941 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were steady at 16.29 cents per pound. End
US$1 = INR 86.40
