Maharashtra kharif area down 1% on yr at 12.88 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Maharashtra reached 12.88 million hectares as of Monday, down over 1% on year from 13.04 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage in the state rose nearly 33% on year to 1.36 million hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy was at 719,143 hectares, up from 631,887 hectares sown a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under bajra fell to 300,013 hectares from 380,843 hectares last year, while that of jowar also fell to 76,552 hectares from 97,065 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage in the state was slightly down at 1.14 million hectares from 1.16 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. The acreage under moong fell to 201,690 hectares from 221,961 hectares a year ago, and that of urad stood at 342,504 hectares against 344,691 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses in the state was 1.73 million hectares, down from 1.79 million hectares sown last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 4.79 million hectares, down from 4.96 million hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 4.67 million hectares from 4.81 million hectares last year. The area sown under groundnut also fell to 108,233 hectares from 134,893 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage in the state was at 3.74 million hectares, down from 3.98 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, the report showed. Sugarcane acreage also fell to 139,211 hectares from 147,874 hectares last year.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra was 63.5% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 41.3% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
