MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur rose while prices of urad were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. A rise in demand for chana products for the upcoming festivals is supporting prices, they said. Prices of domestic tur rose tracking a rise in prices of imports, they said. Prices of urad are steady amid a lack of cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 6,450-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices are higher on account of a rise in festival season demand, he said. Major Hindu festivals take place in succession August onwards, beginning with Raksha Bandhan on Aug. 9 this year, he explained. The consumption of processed chana, or chana dal, and besan rises during festivals, supporting prices, he said.

Prices of chana are likely to reach the INR 7,000 per 100 kg mark in the short term, Mehta said. A drop in arrivals is also supporting prices, he said. Arrivals of the rabi chana crop usually fall at this time of the year as stocks with farmers start depleting. Even if farmers have stocks on hand, they are too busy with the kharif sowing to bring it to the markets, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose INR 75 from the previous day to INR 6,375-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose INR 25 from Tuesday to INR 6,925-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals fell 300 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of domestic tur rose tracking the rise in prices of imports from Myanmar and African countries, Kedia said. "Once the domestic market gets to know of higher import rates, they begin to hike up prices of domestic tur because there is nothing else to take cues from," he said. Demand for domestic tur has been down for a few weeks, leaving the market without any direction, he said.

Though demand for domestic tur is muted, prices are unlikely to fall further as they have already reached the lowest possible range for the season, Kedia said. "Unless prices of imports nosedive, which is highly unlikely, prices of domestic tur could be range-bound in the short term," he said.

Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, rose INR 110 from the previous day to INR 6,200-INR 6,722 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 6,600-INR 7,400 per 100 kg. Prices of urad are steady amid a lack of cues, traders said.

The market is keeping an eye on the progress of the kharif urad sowing, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Sowing in key urad-producing states such as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh has been delayed by torrential rainfall disrupting fieldwork, the association said. As of Friday, the area sown with urad across the country fell to 1.4 million hectares from 1.7 million hectares a year ago, according to data from the agriculture ministry.  End
