MUMBAI – Prices of all oilseeds fell in the key markets across the country Tuesday, traders said. Prices of oilseeds are likely to remain range-bound or fall due to sluggish demand for edible oil currently, they said. Demand will pick up only during the festival season, they added.

Prices of MUSTARD seed at Jaipur in Rajasthan fell INR 50 to INR 7,525-INR 7,550 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency, an agricultural commodities trader. Arrivals of the oilseed across the country were at 400,000 bags, up from 375,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) the previous day, said Rajesh Patel of GGN Research.

Mustard seed prices at Kota in Rajasthan fell INR 100 to INR 6,900 per 100 kg, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were at 12,000 bags, up 4,000 bags from the previous day, he said.

SOYBEAN prices at Gondal in Gujarat fell by INR 100 to INR 3,800-INR 4,000 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 17,780 bags, up by 80 bags from the previous day (1 bag = 100 kg), said Asok Virvani, a local trader. Prices of the oilseed are likely to remain at current levels for the next one or two months as both domestic and export demand are weak at the moment, traders said. Export demand is low because the quality of domestic soybeans is inferior to that of those from America, they added.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal fell by INR 100 to INR 4,500-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 3,930 bags, up 300 bags from the previous day, Virvani said. "The quality of arrivals was poor, which is why prices of groundnuts fell," Virvani said. Like soybean, groundnut prices are expected to fall in the medium term due to weak demand on account of the increasing availability of cheaper imported palm oil, commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
