MUMBAI – Prices of wheat rose Tuesday in a few markets due to firm demand and delay in the government's open-market sales, traders said. Maize prices fell due to selling pressure while rice prices were steady, traders said.
WHEAT prices in the Vashi market of Navi Mumbai were up INR 50 from the previous day at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, said wholesale dealer Devendra Vora. The government has not started selling wheat under open-market sales, because of which prices up, he said. There is a possibility of prices rising by INR 100 per 100 kg in the near-term due to firm demand and no sales by the government, he added.
Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,790 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. In Delhi, the price of the food grain was steady at INR 2,780 per 100 kg, traders said.
In Kota, Rajasthan, wheat prices were up by INR 10-INR 15 from the previous day at INR 2,550 per 100 kg due to firm demand, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 5,000 bags to 15,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) as the intensity of rainfall in the state has decreased, he said. Prices rose despite rise in arrivals as the government has not started the open-market sales scheme for wheat, he added.
The government usually starts wheat sales in the open market from Jul. 1. It has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open-market sales of wheat in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). Vora said the government may start selling wheat in August.
MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 15 from the previous day to INR 2,285 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices fell as stockists started selling the grain to clear their stock as the new crop arrivals will start in October, he said.
The market expects higher maize supply in October from the ongoing kharif crop owing to higher acreage. According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, acreage of maize, the second-largest cereal crop during the kharif season, was 7.1 million hectares, up over 15% on year as of Friday.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE at Vashi market held steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Vora said. Prices of 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Vora said rice prices are likely to be steady in the near-term.
Prices of sona masoori rice were also steady from the previous day at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar, said. End
